Life Coaching in the Desert – a first for Dubai
One of the things I like most about living in Dubai is the variety of different activities you can get involved in here – as someone who is naturally curious, I love exploring anything new, so when I received an invitation for a unique seminar in the desert, I was keen to know more.
Apparently this was an event for people looking to achieve more out of their life and reach their goals, which would provide a great experience and leave participants with a clear vision for the years ahead, a series of goals that inspire action, and strategies to achieve these across their personal and/or professional life. This couldn’t have been better timed for me. Over the last few months, I have been on somewhat of a personal journey, and without getting too intimate with the details, suffice it to say that I have been thinking a lot about my hopes and dreams for the future. At the same time, I love getting out of the city, and this was a great excuse for an alternative evening.
The small group met the coach, Oskar Andermo, at a coffee shop in Motor City and followed the group in convoy out into the dunes. Unsure of the area we were going, I opted to leave my car and jump in with the others once we made the turn off road. Oskar works with a team from Explorer Tours, who arrange desert safaris with a difference – you wont find the ubiquitous camps here, no belly dancers or dressing up stations in sight, just the raw natural beauty of the desert. We stopped at a great spot where mats were already laid out around a flip chart in the middle of the big rolling dunes and Oskar started his coaching seminar. The content was good, his approach is very much based around living life by design, the law of attraction, NLP, mental training and positive psychology. Once this short presentation was over, we were given a workbook and encouraged to head out on our own into the dunes and work through the exercises individually whilst the sun slowly set. The setting really did make a difference, with no distractions except the sound of the wind gently blowing the sand and the sight of a beautiful sunset, it was easy to look back at recent months and years and analyse successes and challenges, and to close your eyes and look forward to what you might like to achieve. The group was so engrossed in this part of the evening that we spent more than an hour like this, before night fall prompted us to move. Back at the camp, a fire had been lit under the stars, and a BBQ was already underway, so we rejoined the group and enjoyed a lovely meal together while we discussed our thoughts and ideas with Oskar and each other. After the BBQ, the team gently cleared away the BBQ while we enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the desert over some shisha, reflecting on everything the had arisen.
It was only around a 45 minute drive from Dubai, and although we had left early (3.30pm from Motor City, in order to catch the sunset) we were finished between 8pm – 9pm, giving us plenty of time to get home and start planning the practical steps to achieve our goals!
It was a really worthwhile experience for all who attended, and will certainly be something I look to do again, perhaps in six months’ time, to keep on track, and I’d highly recommend it for anyone else who would like to get a bit more focus on their life and the direction it is taking.
